Belawai Sub-District Office was established on April 7, 1973 through Government Newsletter No. 19 (Part II) Vol. XLII Vo. 12 dated April 4, 1987 as required by Section 3 (1) of the Administrative Ordinance (Cap.4) 1967. At that time, Belawai Sub-District was under the administration of Sarikei Division, Sarawak. Belawai Sub-District, which is synonymous with tiger shrimp has a predominantly Melanau Tribe.
The Belawai Sub-District was placed under the administration of Daro District in Mukah Division, Sarawak on March 1, 2002 following the declaration of Mukah as the 10th Division of Sarawak. In August 2015, Belawai Sub-District was upgraded to Tanjung Manis District. The area for Tanjung Manis District is 730.53km. The main link of this area is land transport, but 30% of the area in Tanjung Manis still has to use water transport such as Paloh, Stalun, Sebayang, Berangan River and Telok Gelam. The District's road network connects the surrounding areas through Ferry services as well as access to nearby major cities such as Sibu Town.
